“A stitch in time saves nine” says an adage and when it comes to last minute efforts in saving lives, every second counts. Public access defibrillators (PAD) or Automated External Defibrillators (AED) as they are called, are defibrillators used to revive a person of cardiac arrest. These devices come with automated voice controls and easy operations for everyone to be able to use it in times of need.
In India, over 10 million deaths occur by SCA (Sudden Cardiac Arrests). SCAs occur when the heart abruptly stops functioning due to a condition called Ventricular Fibrillation. With the window from collapse to shock being as less as 5 minutes, every passing minute reduces the chances of the patient’s survival by 7-10%.SCAs most commonly happen outside the hospital and immediate support with an AED and CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) is the only treatment available.
Installing AEDs in public places is of utmost importance as the timely use increases a patient’s survival chance by 74%. BPL’s Phoenix is a public access defibrillator that can be installed in malls, airports, railway stations, bus stops, office spaces, parking lots, apartment complexes etc. Phoenix has voice commands to instruct the public on how to attach the electrodes and how to deliver a shock to the person suffering SCA.
Once CPR is performed to resuscitate the victim and there are no signs of recovery, PAD should be used to deliver shock in conjunction with chest compression.
In a commendable effort, Trichy has started installing AEDs in public places. An initiative by a private trust, the city is to see AEDs installed to help reduce deaths by SCAs. Here’s a news clip of the same from New India Express:
We hope that more such initiatives are taken in all districts to improve the quality of life and reassure safety and care.

Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) play an important role in saving Sudden Cardiac Attack victims, by delivering electric shocks which restore heartbeats. For existing installation locations in various Indian cities, refer to cprsaveslife.in/defibrillator-aed-installations-india
